The Nigerian Prison Service (NPS) 2021

The Nigerian Correctional Service, formerly known as the Nigerian Prison Service until August 2019, is a Nigerian government agency responsible for the operation of correctional (prison) facilities in the country.

The National Prison Service is entirely empowered by the 1972 Decree No.9 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended in the 2004 CAP P29 laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the 2019 Nigerian Correctional Services Act, to take care of those lawfully detained, classify their conduct triggers, and retrain them.

The Nigerian Prison Service is led by Ja’afaru Ahmed, the Controller-General of Prison Service, and is based in the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja. He was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2016 and reports directly to the Minister of Interior as well as the Civil Defence, Fire, Immigration, and Prison Services Board.

The Nigerian Prison Service, which was established in 1968 after the former Native Authority Prisons were abolished, now has a total of 240 prisons, including 138 main prisons (for convicts), 85 satellite facilities, 14 farm centers, and three Borstal Institutions.

Above all, the Nigerian Prison Service (Nigerian Correctional Service) has only one goal: to create a credible prison system. This can be accomplished by effective penal procedures that result in long-term changes in convicts’ attitudes, habits, and beliefs. This is to ensure that these convicts have a smooth transition back into society.

What do the Nigerian Prison Service’s duties entail?

The CAP P29 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004 give the Nigerian Prisons Service complete operational authority. This law gives the Nigerian Prison Service the authority to perform the tasks mentioned below.

  1. To place all those in lawful custody who have been accredited as such by courts of competent jurisdiction.
  2. To present defendants in court when they are due to appear.
  3. To find out what triggers convicts’ antisocial behavior.
  4. To put in place structures for convicts’ care and training in preparation for their eventual reintegration into society as law-abiding people after their release.
  5. To develop and manage prison farms and industries in order to rehabilitate convicts while also generating revenue for the federal government.

What is the Nigerian Prison Service’s strength?

The power of the Nigerian Prison Service, like that of every other civil service, is in its personnel. The Nigerian Prison Service now has over 28,500 officers on staff, with many more receiving training.

What is the Nigerian Prison Service’s Main Function?

The Nigerian Prison Service’s (NPS) primary role is outlined in its mission statement: “to promote public safety by assisting offenders in their reformation and rehabilitation under healthy, secure, and humane conditions in compliance with internationally agreed standards, and to encourage their social reintegration into society.”

The following are some of the NPS-specific functions:

  1. To take care of lawfully arrested suspects or convicts.
  2. To figure out what drives convicts to act the way they do.
  3. Convicts should be retrained to become useful and notable people of whatever society they find themselves in.
