2021 NIS Recruitment Update
Here is the latest news about NIS recruitment for those interested in applying for Nigerian Immigration Service Recruitment Update 2021/2022.
Nigerians should be wary of officials allegedly selling recruitment slots, according to the Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), Muhammad Babandede.
He urged them to report corrupt officials to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), emphasizing that no Nigerian could pay money to an immigration officer in order to obtain a foreign passport.
Nigerians should also make payments and register online to obtain or renew their international passports, according to him. Babandede insisted that the NIS was not currently hiring and identified the website www.immigration.com as false, where a fraudster had been using his and the Minister of Interior’s images to defraud citizens.
He mentioned that the official website of the NIS remained www.immigration.gov.ng, and that any recruitment exercise conducted by the command would be advertised on the official website as well as in national dailies.

Before I discuss the application process, I will include a brief overview of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) for those who are unfamiliar with its functions.
Nigerian Immigration Service Details
Since its split from the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) in 1958, the NIS has undergone a number of transformations. Under the leadership of the Chief Federal Immigration Officer (CFIO), the Immigration Department, as it was then called, was entrusted with the core immigration duties, and Mr. EH Harrison was the first to sit in that chair. The Immigration Ordinance of 1958 was inherited by the department in its early stages. The department began with a limited organizational reach and a low-profile, straightforward approach to achieving the government’s desired priorities and objectives. Only the Visa and Business Sections were developed during this period.
The Immigration Department, however, came of age on August 1st, 1963, when it was formally created by an Act of Parliament, Cap I71, Laws of the Federation of Nigerian. The department’s head was given the title of Director of Immigration. As a result, the first Immigration officers were NPF officers. As a Civil Service entity, it became a department under the control and oversight of the Federal Ministry of Internal Affairs (FMIA).
The title of “Agent of Immigration” was modified to “Comptroller General of Immigration Service” on October 1, 1992, following some institutional changes and a Government white paper, giving the Service a paramilitary status. As a result, CGI Garba Abbas, the previous Director of Immigration, became the first Comptroller General of Immigration (CGI).
As a result, the Service has come a long way in its reform and restructuring efforts and is now well equipped to introduce modern migration management. During this time, the Service’s organizational and operational framework underwent adjustments that were unavoidable in order to accommodate new roles and changing regional and sub-regional political alignments. The ECOWAS and African Affairs division, Aliens Control and Border Patrol Management, and other new roles for the Service were among them.
Furthermore, in 1988, the Service was entrusted with the duty of issuing all Nigerian travel documents, including passports.
With the launch of the Machine Readable Passport (MRP) in June 1998 and the Combined Expatriate Residence Permit and Aliens Card (CERPAC) in 2001, the Service welcomed the use of ICT in its operations. Since then, it has made significant progress in incorporating ICT into its processes and operating procedures, most notably with the implementation of online payment for its services, which paved the way for e-revenue collections in Nigerian, making it the first government agency to do so.
Under the leadership of the then CGI CJ Udeh OFR, the NIS launched the e-Passport on May 17th, 2007, in an effort to build on the MRP and in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) requirements, placing the Federal Republic of Nigerian on the map as the first country in Africa and among the first countries in the world to do so. The use of the e-passport has become a key weapon in the battle against transnational crime because it provides biometric information about its holders, making multiple acquisitions and identity theft difficult.
In 2009, ICAO, the global body that governs requirements for travel documents, admitted Nigerian to its Board as the sole African delegate, in recognition of the Nigerian Immigration Service’s achievements as exemplified above.
As a result of this development, e-passport machines have been built in all states of the federation as well as some Nigerian missions abroad, while the NIS has been dispatching personnel for passport intervention to all corners of the globe in compliance with the Federal Government’s citizen diplomacy policy. This involves using mobile passport processing equipment to obtain and process passports for Nigerians living abroad.
The establishment of a well-equipped forensic laboratory for the analysis of travel and other documents is another significant achievement in the field of ICT production. It should also be noted that the NIS staff in charge of this laboratory are highly trained, having undergone multiple local and foreign trainings on document fraud detection and techniques.
The National Assembly passed the Immigration Act into law on May 25, 2015, to improve the legal structure for the NIS. As a result, the Act abolished the now-obsolete 1963 Immigration Act and established a new Directorate for the Service known as the Migration Directorate.
The NIS has had three (3) Chief Federal Immigration Officers (CFIO), three (3) Directors of Immigration, two (2) Acting Comptrollers General, and eight (8) substantive Comptrollers General since its establishment in 1963, with the new Comptroller General, CGI Muhammad Babandede MFR. He’s taking big steps and breaking ground in order to modernize and standardize the Service’s operations while ensuring that timely and effective service delivery to its many constituents is not jeopardized.
